Wooden base, stand and lid.
Plastic globe terrarium with cactus and jade succulents, layers of rock, charcoal, soil and moss. 5.2015 △ My friend Molly took this photo on film. I have been interested in how covering certain parts of the face and body with recognizable patterns can serve as small visual queues of information. So simple, yet such an impact.
△ Here are a few quick distortion pieces that I have been interested in lately. Looking at old photographs of celebrities before they are famous has intrigued me lately as they convey a certain feeling of innocence in their eyes… I see my distortion as foreshadowing the future torment that comes with becoming a celebrity. These old yearbook style photos have an aged quality to them, intensifying the youthful glow of their smiles. A smile can say much as they permeate the language barrier, but how can you tell if it's genuine? Inner torment is often unreadable in people that are taught to hide their true emotions.
△ It's difficult for me to pinpoint what makes Stroud's effortless vintage portraits so special. They seem so simple-- photographing preexisting photos from old newspaper clippings with dried fruits//herbs layered on top. Something about these and her work with flowers makes me feel nostalgic… I would like to capture this feeling in my work. △ S h a y n e S t r o u d
\ On photographing vintage yearbook photos / "I like using old things to make new things. They were actually portraits in a newspaper from the 50′s. The people looked sad." / On her use of flowers \ "Florals reoccur [in my work] because flowers represent innocence, and the delicate balance of life, death, and fragility to me. Also my love of Dutch still-life paintings of flowers." This is a photo that I worked on last year. It is a group shot of my great, great grandfather and his work buddies. I was drawn to this image because of the water marks, dust and general wear of the photo. Each facial expression shows a piece of that person's personality and I feel they all have very telling eyes. I decided to embrace the flaws of the image, even enhancing them through repetition and photoshop editing.
