Since the population explosion of the 20th century, the population of humans on earth has shown exponential growth, bringing todays population to over 7 billion. Earth is a finite planet, meaning that one day it will run out of resources.
Between 1987 and 1989 alone, the earth gained 1 billion people. That’s over 111 times the population of Tokyo. It is calculated that earth’s population will gain another billion in just 12 years. An interesting point to highlight is that the population problem of today is not due to high mortality and high fertility, but low mortality and low fertility. As medicine improves for the rich, health decreases and birthing mothers multiply in poorer countries. To support such a quickly growing population, “food production should increase by 70% by 2050,” (millenium-project.org). As it is, humans are fundamentally flawed due to the inability to evenly distribute food, which is an ongoing concern.
Droughts, falling water tables, water pollution and the diversion of water from rural to urban spaces also pose startling threats to future water supply. “Water, like energy, is essential to virtually every human endeavor,” as we use it to grow, create and drink, (The Post Carbon Reader). The fact is that our climate is changing faster than we think, and we may not have time to adapt.
Below I left a video showing some work being done in hopes of restoring the the Bronx-River. A beautifully shot video that exudes positivity and light on an ugly situation.
